IT’S King George day at Ascot on Saturday, and we are in for a real treat.

The ITV cameras are in town for five races, with the feature Group 1 due off at 3.35pm. Our man Jack Keene has taken a close look at the big terrestrial races.

1.50 Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed)

A fascinating race in prospect, but the drop in class could see SAINT LAWRENCE regain the winning thread.

The well-bred son of Al Kazeem bolted up at Redcar in June and followed that up with an excellent effort in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket.

He looked to pay the price for making rapid headway during the hottest part of the race that day, losing a couple of places late on. He has a bright future.

Saeiqa remains a maiden after two starts but there was absolutely nothing wrong with his performance in the Coventry at Royal Ascot.

It remains to be seen how good a renewal of that race it was, but he looks likely to appreciate this slightly stiffer test of stamina.

Twaasol is unbeaten and commands respect on the back of his Woodcote win, for all that wasn’t the deepest race.

At the prices, tidy Doncaster maiden winner Chindit makes each-way appeal.

SELECTION: Saint Lawrence

2.25 Moet & Chandon International Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

This isn’t the first time that many of these horses have crossed swords – but it remains a tricky old puzzle to solve. I will probably take a dart at a couple at long odds here.

KASBAAN wasn’t seen to best effect in the Bunbury Cup last time when he paid the price for helping to set a strong gallop in the early stages.

But on his reappearance he was ridden quietly in a good, albeit steadily-run, race and finished off well to grab a never-nearer third.

There should be plenty of speed on here so you would expect connections to revert back to the hold-up tactics that saw him go close at HQ off 1lb higher in June. This stiff 7f will suit.

SHELIR ran a cracker for fifth in the Buckingham Palace Handicap at the Royal meeting, and he was undone by very testing ground at Haydock last time.

He is now 4lb lower than his run over C&D two starts ago, when he could arguably have finished a lot closer, and the booking of Tom Marquand is a big boost.

There are plenty of dangers, as you’d expect.

Blue Mist was third in this off 2lb higher last summer and should be bang there, for all he is starting to look a bit tricky.

Ebury raced on the wrong part of the track in the Buckingham Palace and that effort deserves to be upgraded.

Sheikh Hamdan pair Eshaasy and Mutamaasik, particularly the latter who was third in the Buckingham Palace, are also worth a place on the shortlist.

EACH-WAY SELECTIONS: Kasbaan & Shelir

3.00 Betfred ‘Nifty Fifty’ Handicap

A few of these should prove better than handicappers in time.

EVENING SUN bumped into the classy King Leonidas at Newmarket on his final start as a two-year-old, but he made a triumphant return to action at HQ last month.

He won going away by three and a half lengths that day, but in truth the winning margin could have been double that as he endured plenty of trouble in running.

He is narrowly preferred to Tsar, a smashing son of Kingman who didn’t have to work too hard to make a winning handicap debut at Yarmouth.

The William Haggas team can do no wrong at present, so top-weight Johan commands the utmost respect on the back of his gutsy Newbury win.

Dance Fever and Great Ambassador aren’t out of things either.

SELECTION: Evening Sun

3.35 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (Group 1)

Disappointing that there are only four runners (from two stables) this season, but it’s an exceptional year and hopefully it’s a one-off.

All eyes will be on ENABLE, and her comeback second behind Ghaiyyath in the Coral-Eclipse has divided opinion.

I was of the view that it was a perfectly satisfactory return to action behind a top horse at a track which is historically a front-runners paradise.

Frankie Dettori was keen not to give her too hard a race that day and the fact she managed to edge out Japan, who was well-positioned, moved into the race strongly and had a run under his belt, was a big positive.

This will no doubt be a strategic race, but Dettori is the master tactician and you can bank on him to be in the right place at the right time.

Japan will be absolutely A1 with two runs behind him, and he is now stepping back up to his optimum trip. He is clearly the main danger to Enable.

But, even if he did need the first two runs of the year, he hasn’t seen either race out particularly strongly and he will do well to give 3lb to a top-class older mare.

Anthony Van Dyck’s career continues on a downward trajectory, but he is at is best on fast ground so provided the going remains decent he should finish on the podium.

Sovereign is the likely pace angle and he was entitled to need the comeback run after a long lay-off. But his Irish Derby win, when he was gifted an easy lead, remains head and shoulders his best effort.

SELECTION: Enable

4.10 Betfred.com Handicap

MANKAYAN kept on stoutly to win a competitive race at Doncaster last time out.

He stays further than this and is steadily progressive for his in-form yard, so he gets the nod in a tricky race.

Media Storm is lightly-race and went down by a short-head at Kempton. An opening mark of 82 may prove lenient.

Look Closely flopped on his return to action at Newmarket, but he probably needed the run and had bolted up at Leicester the time before. Keep an eye on him in the market.

SELECTION: Mankayan
